The project:

These career opportunities will engage you in a signature project of The VII Foundation with one of its key strategic partners, PhotoWings. Together we are creating a dynamic and evolving global network of visual and multimedia journalists. We are building a community that provides further education, networking and mentoring opportunities to a fast-growing cohort of 700 early to mid-career visual media practitioners who are alumni of VII Academy and Foundry Workshops.

About us:

The VII Foundation’s mission is to transform visual journalism by empowering new voices and creating stories that advocate change. In a world where beliefs and actions are increasingly out-of-sync with facts and realities, transforming visual journalism is an urgent task.

The VII Foundation’s work begins with the educational programs of VII Academy; at its heart, it involves the production of long-form projects and documentary films and includes VII Insider, our free online platform for public debate and discussion of the issues central to visual journalism.

With the support of our partners, The VII Foundation strives to create a broader picture of the world that fosters a more democratized global conversation to challenge established gatekeepers and disturb conventional narratives.

The VII Foundation is a US-based 501c3 non-profit organization. The VII Academy is a non-profit registered in Arles, France, and Sarajevo, Bosnia.

Community Project Manager, VII Foundation

This role will start with working in close collaboration with the teams at The VII Foundation and PhotoWings to help create a dynamic, engaged online community of photographers and visual journalists who are building careers all over the world. Drawing exclusively from VII Academy and Foundry workshop alumni you will work with us and our partners to create a program of continuing education, mentorship and network building for early to mid-career journalists. You will work with our team to drive the development of content for the program and manage the needs of the community and all stakeholders.

What you’ll need to be successful:

An extensive professional knowledge of the world of photojournalism, at least a decade of experience in the media and some experience in education. A broad network of media, non-profit and super governmental professionals, including editors, photographers, and curators. You must be an organized, responsive and thorough person with a commitment to maintaining and nurturing a diverse and dispersed community.

You are a master at multi-tasking with excellent communication skills and an upbeat attitude, generally a helpful, reliable, highly collaborative and positive presence in the workplace. Most importantly, you should have a genuine desire to meet the needs of others. You should be able to work flexible hours, at ease with working in an international environment and comfortable in acting under limited supervision. You should always be responsive, and willing to meet challenges directly.

You will be able to handle organizational and support tasks, organize multiple weekly and monthly events, administrate and collate a living archive, maintain communications with high-level partners, manage confidential files, update paperwork, schedule appointments, and set up meetings.

You will need to demonstrate strong project management, budgeting, and administrative skills related to project management and platform development. You will create, maintain, and enter information into databases. You should be comfortable in creating new pathways and building projects and activities from the ground up.

You will be responsible for coordinating all activities, including educational workshops, live discussions, mentorships, lecture series, exhibitions, and assignments for community members, and handle all pre- and post-event logistics.

Good writing skills are essential: you’ll be writing copy for a periodic newsletter, proofreading, finalizing documents, creating official presentations, producing management-level reports, and conducting research.

You should expect to assist the CEO in identifying fundraising opportunities, research potential sponsors, provide materials for proposals, and look into developing the organization’s professional relationships.

Excellent computer skills are essential, especially in word processing and spreadsheets. Knowledge and skills in software (Discord is essential), Zoom, Slack, Asana, and AirTable are crucial. You should be able to work both in Microsoft and Apple Mac environments.

You are fully proficient in English, excellent in both verbal and written communication. Other languages are a plus.

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification is beneficial.
