Sixteen year old AJ mourns at the crime scene where his neighbor Antonio Perez, a barangay worker, has been shot by unidentified assailants on January 4, 2017 outside their shanty in Pasay City in the Philippines. Since the war on drugs in the Philippines was launched in 2016, thousands have been killed by unidentified men on motorcycles which many link to death squads, many of these cases remain unsolved. Over three weeks in October, we are running a special online workshop on ethical literacy.

We will select 12-15 participants, and there is no cost for those chosen. The application procedure is described below.

There will also be three online public lectures as part of this workshop that anyone can register to attend (details of those are forthcoming).

This workshop explores what photography ethics is, why photography ethics matters, and how you can apply photography ethics to your practice. We will look at case studies, share experiences, and reflect on the ethical decisions that we make. The workshop is geared toward photographers and photo editors, but the topics covered will be relevant to those who work with other forms of visual media.

This workshop and the public lectures will be held on Tuesday, 3 October, 10 October, and 17 October. The program will be delivered over three 2.5-hour sessions (including the lectures) on those days. The time of the workshop and lectures is TBC.

Savannah Dodd, founder and director of the Photography Ethics Centre, will facilitate these sessions. She will be joined by noteworthy guest speakers who will share their experiences and answer your questions about how they address ethics in their work.

Selected participants will be expected to attend all three sessions and to do assigned preparatory work in advance of each session. Participants will be expected to commit 4-5 hours per week for the three weeks. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have crafted their own Statement of Ethics and will be eligible for certification from the Photography Ethics Centre.

Application

Please apply with a 1-2 page PDF emailed to [email protected] that answers these six questions:

    1. Why do you want to attend this course? Why do you want to make time to reflect on ethics in your practice?
    2. Why should we offer you a place in this workshop? Why are you the right person to take this workshop?
    3. What is the biggest question you have right now about photography ethics?
    4. Can you make the time to attend the sessions and do the assigned preparatory work?
    5. Have you undertaken any previous workshops (including VII Academy courses)? This is not a requirement.
    6. Please provide a link to your website or online portfolio.

Applications must be received by 12:00 EST on Monday, 11 September 2023, and those chosen will be notified by the end of the following week.
