Nichole Sobecki‘s series Where Our Land Was will be on view at Neimënster Abbey in Luxembourg from June 27, 2024, to September 30, 2024.
The exhibition, Earth Is Not Flat But Soon Will Be – Climate Stories Near & Far, curated by Yasemin Elçi, highlights the urgent issues of the climate crisis and its profound effects on humanity globally. This group exhibition features five photographers who explore the severe and often hidden consequences of climate change, including the impact on biodiversity, forced migration, and the extinction of indigenous traditions.
Sobecki’s work focuses on the dire consequences of climate change in Somalia, capturing the increasing poverty, internal conflicts, human trafficking, piracy, and forced immigration caused by rising temperatures. Her poignant portrayal of the heavy burdens borne by women during times of crisis invites viewers to engage in vital discussions on social justice, displacement, and the complex interplay between communities and their changing environments. This powerful exhibition is part of the broader dialogue on environmental degradation and social inequality prompted by industrial activities.
