#VIIPhotoDC POPUP WORKSHOPS

Join the photographers of VII at various meeting locations throughout Washington, DC, on Sunday for a day of popup workshops. Themes include iPhoneography, executing a creative assignment, and telling the best story with available gear.
Popup Workshop #1 – Ed Kashi & Ashley Gilbertson
In this workshop, participants will use still images to document a Sunday on the DC Mall, with the aim of capturing a tableau of America. After the workshop, each participant will submit five images to Ed Kashi to be put on his blog and social media and, if agreed, an image for the VII Photo Instagram feed.

Popup Workshop #2 – Tomas van Houtryve & Stacey Clarkson (Art Director, Harper’s Magazine)
Participants in this workshop will be assigned to shoot photos for a fiction, memoir, or poetry piece from the archives of Harper’s Magazine, and will have the opportunity to edit and discuss their work with the instructors at the end of the day.

Popup Workshop #3 – John Stanmeyer & Sim Chi Yin
Students of this workshop will explore communication, passion and storytelling with a camera that ironically has a phone in it. There will also be time to discuss posting and sharing photographs via Instagram and the value of sharing work from home and afar (nearly) instantly with a global audience.

Popup Workshop #4 – Ron Haviv
In this lecture-style workshop, Haviv draws on 25 years of experience to offer practical guidance and inspirational advice on preparing for the expected and unexpected when in the field and the studio, while also managing deadlines and other requirements. Special guest lecturer Neal Jackson will discuss how to deal with contracts.

On May 17 & 18, join the photographers of VII for a day-long seminar, and an evening panel and reception hosted in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center, followed by a day of Popup Workshops. The program of events will critically explore the opportunities and challenges facing contemporary photojournalists, with Popup Workshops offering a chance to engage with the topics discussed and interact more closely with VII photographers. With an overarching theme of “Reinventing Photojournalism” for today’s audiences and marketplace, VII has assembled a diverse program that offers an intimate, in-depth look at the forefront of new perspectives in photojournalism amid broad economic, political, and cultural changes.
Throughout the day, AbelCine Training Manager Jeff Lee will be showing off some new gear and will give a short presentation on the part these tools play in today’s evolving world of photojournalism.

Keynote Address: DEFINING DIGNITY | WORLD PRESS PHOTO
John Stanmeyer discusses his World Press Photo of the Year along with issues of dignity, contemporary society, “newsworthiness,” and gaining meaningful audience attention.
EVOLVING AUDIENCES, CHANGING APPROACHES
John Stanmeyer along with Whitney Johnson, Director of Photography for The New Yorker, and Keith Jenkins Director of Photography for National Geographic Digital will discuss how and where photojournalists of the future will reach audiences for whom social media is their funnel and their megaphone.

REVISITING POST-CONFLICT | BEDROOMS OF THE FALLEN
Ashley Gilbertson will discuss his long-term project and upcoming book Bedrooms of the Fallen, in which he visits the bedrooms of men and women who died serving the U.S. in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and how his work has gotten the attention of Veterans’ Affairs and elevated awareness of PTSD and other issues faced by America’s armed forces.

APPROACHING ADVOCACY & IMPACT
Ron Haviv & Ed Kashi discuss the role of photojournalism and motion in raising awareness on a wide range of social issues and present examples of executed projects that have had measurable impact.

DRONES | A NEW SOCIAL NARRATIVE
Special presentation by Tomas van Houtryve of his work Blue Sky Days—the longest photography feature ever published by Harper’s Magazine—for which he attached a camera to a drone purchased on Amazon. Van Houtryve will discuss his approach to using photography to prompt audiences to consider and understand how constant surveillance affects us as a society.

BEYOND PHOTOGRAPHY

Both VII and Pulitzer share the goal of raising awareness about deep systemic issues around the world, and putting a human face on crises that too often remain hidden. Three photographers of VII who have received support from the Pulitzer Center will discuss how they have reached across multiple platforms, news outlets, and funding sources to get the story out.
BEYOND “STRAIGHT NEWS”: THE GROWING ROLE OF NGOs IN JOURNALISM

As media companies restructure and communication tools change audience behavior, news and advocacy increasingly find shared interest in raising awareness of complex issues. As a result, NGOs are playing an ever-growing role in supporting photojournalism. The panel, moderated by VII co-founder and Chair of this year’s World Press Photo competition Gary Knight, will look at opportunities, tensions and challenges that arise from these collaborations.
