Feminists in Algeria are a small, marginalized group, but after the large political demonstrations in Algiers in 2019, several people have chosen to stand up and fight for women’s rights. One of them is 24-year-old Hawa, a comedian, musician and student.
“As a woman, I have to fight for my rights. I am an activist and a feminist. All we are asking for is change. The new generation is bringing something new. In Algeria, women are viewed differently than men. We are not considered important. Hopefully, in 5 to10 years, the situation will have changed, and we will have more women than men in Algeria. In our time women are starting to do things they did not do before, like going to cafes with men. The religion and the tradition after the family code are making things difficult for women.”
