“Outside the Binary,” a portrait series by VII Photo contributing photographer Linda Bournane Engelberth, is now on display as part of the group exhibition “The Matrix of Power” at the Nitja Center for Contemporary Art in Lillestrøm, Norway.
Outside the Binary explores non-binary gender identities. This project showcases individuals who defy traditional gender binaries, including those with fluid gender identities that may change over time and agender individuals who do not define themselves by gender at all. These subjects hail from various global locations yet share common experiences.
The Matrix of Power exhibition delves into themes of power structures, identity, and the impact of the observer’s gaze, particularly within photography and video art. It questions the neutrality of the artistic gaze, exploring how power dynamics, gender roles, and identity are influenced by and reflected in the act of observation. The exhibition aims to provoke thought on the implications of observation and the power structures it reinforces, highlighting the complexity of viewing and interpretation through the lens of art history and contemporary critique.
“The Matrix of Power” is open until April 7, 2024, at the Nitja Center for Contemporary Art in Lillestrøm.
