"Sleeping Beauty." Madje Steber holds a stuffed cat while napping in the afternoon at her assisted living facility in Hollywood, Fla. in 2008. Her daughter, Maggie, visited 50 places before finding this facility that allowed her to spend the night when her mother, who had dementia, was having difficult days. Maggie Steber/VII

VII Photo contributing photographer Maggie Steber presents her poignant nine-year project, Madje Has Dementia, as part of the group exhibition, Can You See Me? at the Leica Store and Gallery in Boston. The exhibition, which runs from April 25 to June 8, 2024, features Steber’s intimate exploration of her mother’s journey through dementia, captured through the lens of their deeply personal relationship.

The exhibition also showcases the works of Rania Matar and Eva Woolridge, creating a narrative around the themes of age, race, femininity, and representation across cultures.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 17, from 6 PM to 8 PM at 74 Arlington Street, with free entry.
