Kolsky project, 2019–2024. Valya poses with a World War II–era gun near Lake Semyonovskoye in Murmansk, Russia, 2021. Valya and his father, winter swimmers, were passing by the lake on their way for a swim while historical reenactors were gathering nearby with weapons. His father asked to photograph his son with the gun on his phone, and Valya posed briefly. Valya says he dreams of enrolling in a military school to become a paratrooper, inspired by a YouTube singer who once served in the Russian airborne forces. © Tanya Sharapova.
