Join us for Beyond the Frame, an evening celebrating the completion of Getting Started in Natural History Filmmaking, a new program by Nature Through Her Eyes and The VII Foundation.

Taking place in Sarajevo, the evening brings together the program’s participants and Program Director Jacqueline Farmer for a panel conversation and two film screenings. Together, the films and conversation offer a look at the ways we observe, interpret and tell stories about the natural world — and the different perspectives that shape those stories.

Discussion | Sarajevo
Language: English
Join the participants of Getting Started in Natural History Filmmaking, a new Nature Through Her Eyes and The VII Foundation program in the Western Balkans, for a conversation with Jacqueline Farmer, Program Director and Lead Educator.

The panel marks the closing event of the program, which brought together women storytellers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, and North Macedonia, with backgrounds ranging from science and medicine to photography and filmmaking.

During the program, participants spent time observing and filming in the Perućica rainforest, one of Europe’s last remaining old-growth forests. Drawing on this shared experience, the panel will explore how our knowledge, identity, and lived experience shape what we notice in nature and the stories we choose to tell — and why diverse perspectives matter in conservation.

The participants will also introduce the environmental and conservation stories they are developing as part of the program.

Documentary | United States | 27 min 34 sec
Directed by: Julie Busse and Candice Odgers
Featuring: Casey Anderson
Original score: M. G. Clark
Language: English, with BHS subtitles

In the Alaskan wilderness, two ageing brown bears are approaching the end of their lives. Once powerful, they now spend their days resting quietly on the shore while younger bears prepare for winter.

Filmmaker and naturalist Casey Anderson observes their final weeks and reflects on what the bears can teach us about aging, parenthood and death. Interweaving personal family memories with contemplative images of the Alaskan landscape, The Old Bear considers what it means to accept the natural cycles of life and live fully in the present.

Documentary | France | 92 min
Directed by: Marie Amiguet and Vincent Munier
Featuring: Vincent Munier and Sylvain Tesson
Language: French, with BHS and English subtitles

High on the Tibetan Plateau, among remote and inaccessible valleys, lies one of the world’s last sanctuaries of untouched wilderness and rare wildlife.

Through the camera of director and cinematographer Marie Amiguet, wildlife photographer Vincent Munier takes writer and adventurer Sylvain Tesson on a journey through this extraordinary landscape. Over several weeks, the team searches for the elusive snow leopard, one of the rarest and most difficult big cats to observe. Their patient quest becomes a meditation on beauty, silence and humanity’s place within the natural world.

The program is implemented by The VII Foundation and Nature Through Her Eyes and supported by UNESCO through the United Nations regional initiative Youth 4 Inclusion, Equality & Trust, in partnership with the French Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The joint regional United Nations initiative ‘Youth 4 Inclusion, Equality & Trust’ empowers young people to engage in constructive narratives, strengthen intercultural dialogue, inclusion, gender equality and create mutual understanding and trust. Collaboratively, UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women, and relevant partners from the public sector, media, civil society, academia and culture – are working together with youth to increase comprehension and respect for diversity in the region, financially supported by the UN Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund.

This event is supported by the City of Sarajevo.
