with Linda Bournane Engelberth
September 7 – 13, 2017
Khartoum Contemporary Art Center
Oslo, Norway
Linda Bournane Engelberth grew up in Norway with her Norwegian mother, without knowing her Algerian father and his family. For the group show "Algeria (Extract of Perfumes)" Engelberth explores her country of origin — as a stranger, with the feeling of being on the outside. The photos that follow her attempts to absorb the many nuances of life in Algiers and her own first steps in a country and a culture which feels like it should be part of her, but which she does not know.
The larger context of this on-going project will examine how identity is affected by the culture one is brought up in, specifically the differences between Western and Islamic cultures.
