Herbarium by Ismar Čirkinagić
Ismar Čirkinagić is a Bosnian-Danish visual artist. Since 2004, he has been gathering, preserving, and identifying plants from the sites of mass graves across Bosnia-Herzegovina and photographing the landscapes in which they were found. Seventy new plant species have been mounted behind glass and paired with specific information about each mass grave site, reflecting the legacy of war and violence. The project’s ultimate goal is to present the elements of a new life that appears in places where lives have been abruptly cut short.
70 new pieces were specifically made for the premier exhibition at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo.
The exhibition is a project of The VII Foundation in Sarajevo with the Danish Arts Council, Memory Module, KUMA International, the Museum of Contemporary art Ars Aevi, and The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina as partners.
Most recently, HERBARIUM exhibited as part of the new Ars Aevi Nucleus Kyiv. Displayed at the Goethe Institut in Sarajevo as part of a new Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art collection, the exhibition presented work donated by internationally renowned artists in solidarity with and for Kyiv.
