Laura El-Tantawy

Laura El-Tantawy is a British/Egyptian documentary photographer, bookmaker and educator whose work explores home and belonging through a lyrical, socially engaged lens. The first Egyptian to receive the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Award, she was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize (2016) and has won the Prix Virginia and the PhMuseum Women’s Grant. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and published in The New Yorker, National Geographic, TIME, The New York Times, Le Monde and more.

Raised between the UK, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the US, she began as a newspaper photographer before creating the seminal series In the Shadow of the Pyramids. Laura is Founder & Creative Director of PLATFORM 2020, advancing documentary education across Africa and SWANA.
