He was ordained at Westminster Cathedral 25 years ago. “It's more directly brought suffering into the world in some people's lives in the Bible, pandemics and pestilences, are sometimes interpreted as punishments or chastisement. So we're within that tradition, but for the modern age, we're trying to understand what that means. Most bad things are related to humans mucking up the environment, not just physically but also particularly spiritually. And so we've tried to explore that both in sermons and in one-to-one conversations and what as well, but we don't want to give the idea of a sort of arbitrarily angry God, that's not the God we believe in, in the in the Catholic tradition. in the first lockdown, actually, I was just walking across a zebra crossing and one person walking in the other direction said to me what's all this about father?  I'd never met the person before so it was all slightly tongue in cheek, and I said it was it's about you changing and saying, sorry for  things. And then he said, I don't have anything to say sorry for. So as the conversation went on, he said to me, he recommended something to me to look at on the internet. So I said,, okay, I'll do that as long as you type into Google “examination of conscience”.

A massive surplus of housing , combined with the late 2000s recession resulted in a large number of estates being abandoned, unoccupied, partially occupied or uncompleted. In 2010 there were more than 600 so called ghost estates in Ireland, and a governement agency report estimated the number of empty houses in Ireland at greater than 300,000. The report for 2015 lists the number of vacant homes in unfinished estates to be 2,542. Vacant homes do not include derelict houses and homes under construction. The racetrack straddles the Green Line, which divides the once warring sectors of Muslim (West) and Christian (East) Beirut. During the civil war, the track was closed as snipers dueled from windows and rooftops of nearby buildings. Since the end of the war in 1990, the track has been open every Sunday.

Seamus Murphy

Emeritus

Seamus Murphy is the recipient of seven World Press Photo awards for work in Afghanistan, Gaza, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Peru, and Ireland.

He has been exhibited widely and is in the collections of The Getty Museum Los Angeles, Imperial War Museum, Stanford University, FRAC Auvergne, the Incite Project.

He has made films for The New Yorker, Channel 4 Television in the UK, and for musician PJ Harvey.

He is the author of four books: A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan (Saqi Books. 2008)  based on 12 trips to the country between 1994 and 2007. I Am The Beggar of the World (Farrar Straus Giroux. 2014) offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Afghan women through anonymous Landay poetry.

Murphy and PJ Harvey collaborated on the book The Hollow of the Hand (Bloomsbury 2015). An exhibition and presentation followed at the Royal Festival Hall, London in 2015 and at Les Recontres d’Arles in France in 2016.

His latest book, The Republic (Allen Lane. 2016), is a personal portrait of Ireland, exhibited in Dublin in 2017.

In February 2018 at Hotel Fontfreyde in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Murphy exhibited Life is in Many Days, a review of 30 years of his work.
