The Story of a Face

Go inside the groundbreaking face transplant that has given a young woman a second chance at life, with photos by Maggie Steber. This story appears in the September 2018 issue of National Geographic magazine.

At 18, Katie Stubblefield lost her face. At 21, she became the youngest person in the U.S. to undergo the still experimental face transplant surgery. In this photo, Katie is photographed with her parents, Robb and Alesia, 8 months and 23 days after her transplant. Click here to listen to Maggie share the story behind this photo.
