The photographs from this exhibition show what glaciers are, what they do and how they are concerned. Glaciers are a dynamic system and store of unrestricted resources.
Glaciers are both an archive of climatic history and civilization’s progress. Since the end of the Little Ice Age they are losing surface and mass; Since the middle of the 20th century due to the anthropogenically co-originated global warming faster than before.
Glaciers are places of remembrance. Glacial defrosting and the emergence of the past are coupled processes. The return to a previously visited glacier faced with loss. Conversely, its loss reveals both history and future.
The photographs shown for the first time in the Kunstraum Medici were created in 2014 as part of a Swiss-based book and exhibition project that, in collaboration with institutes of the ETH Zurich and the University of Bern, combines visual art and natural sciences.
