Sim Chi Yin’s personal project Dying to Breathe, has been chosen for exhibition at the 4th annaul LUMIX Festival for Young Photojournalists. Features by 60 photographers will be on view at the festival, chosen from more than 1200 submissions sent from 71 countries. The festival will take place June 18 – 22, 2014 at Expo Plaza 2 in Hanover, Germany.

Dying to Breathe is an intimate look at silicosis, a form of pneumoconiosis, and China’s most prevalent occupational  disease. An estimated 6 million are affected by the disease, which primarily affects miners who inhale silica dust over years of working in gold, coal, or silver mines, or in stone-cutting factories. Those who suffer from silicosis die slowly, wasting away as their lungs are gradually overwhelmed with the dust. This project was supported by a travel grant from The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
