The world’s leading photojournalists from VII Photo have teamed up with the technology specialists from AbelCine to present an immersive, two-day educational program. This program examines the technology, craft and business practices of today’s successful visual storytellers. The event is structured as a combination of seminars, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and networking. We welcome attendees with all levels of experience and creative interests.

Day 1: Seminars >>

Workshop #1: Navigating the Transition from Photography to Video
We come from the belief that photographers make great videographers. But with endless equipment possibilities and the mechanics of video production, it is hard to know where to begin as you transition to shooting video. This workshop is designed to ease that transition. From how to shoot for an editor to finding the perfect gear for your creative vision, we will discuss the range of options you need to consider. We will also cover the importance of storyboarding, shooting for coverage and the choices that go into sound recording. This workshop applies to short form and long form alike and is taught by instructors providing a combination in-the-field experience and technical training.
Instructors: Jessica Dimmock (VII Photographer) & Technical Specialist (AbelCine)

Workshop #2: Shooting on the Streets
Ashley Gilbertson and Danny Wilcox Frazier will lead students around Chicago and guide them on how to approach subjects, compose their frames, and find new and unexpected angles. An editing critique at AbelCine with the photographers will follow the shooting session.
Instructors: Ashley Gilbertson(VII Photographer), Danny Wilcox Frazier (VII Photographer)

Workshop #3: Survival: The Complete Travel Toolkit
Ron Haviv will share tips and tricks on how best to survive and thrive in the before, during, and after of a shoot. Your assignment starts before you leave your house: planning, packing and preparing are key components of success, and even the best plans can go awry. From how to pitch a story, find funding and do a budget this workshop will discuss how to plan for success and cope with disaster, with suggestions and anecdotes from a seasoned professional and photojournalist. Learn directly from Ron how to identify and avoid the mistakes he has made over his two decade career.
Instructor: Ron Haviv (VII Co-Founder and Photographer)
