Sara Escobar (b. 1984, Mexico) is a documentary photographer and filmmaker focused on identity, social justice, and resistance to violence. She views images as windows into other realities and mirrors for self-understanding. Through her collaborative workshop Tortugas al Viento, she has published stories in AJ+, National Geographic, MSNBC, Mitú, BusinessInsider, Xinhua, and RNW, while working with organizations including the UN, Metropolitan Group, Greenpeace, and GIZ.
A 2022 VII Fellow and member of Foto Feminasand Women Photographers, Escobar’s first documentary film “To Enlist” received the Young Collective Medium Length Award at the Santiago Alvarez in Memoriam Festival (Cuba) in 2015. She earned a Covid-19 Grant from the National Geographic Foundation for her Pandemic Babis project. Her work has been exhibited internationally, with shows in Mexico City, the United States, and Chile between 2010 and 2019. Currently, she leads an interactive long-term project about resistance toreal estate harassment in Mexico City titled “Aquí amanece más tarde” (Dawn Arrives Later Here).
