The Story Behind the Shot: Ed Kashi on his photo of Ze Peixe

Photo by Ed Kashi. Ze Peixe looks out at the Sergipe River just outside his home in Aracuju, Brazil on June 3, 2002. He has never used moisturizer or any sort of sun protection on his skin. Jose Martins Ribeiro Nunes, also known as Ze Peixe or 'the fish,' is Brazil's most famous boat pilot. Guiding ships into and out of the harbor, he returns to shore by swimming up to 12 km. This simple man, who has never worn shoes and lives for the sea, is a living folk hero."

We’re starting a new series on Facebook where a VII photographer tells readers more about what was going on behind the scenes of one of their archive photographs. First up is Ed Kashi and his 2002 photo of Ze Peixe in Aracuju, Brazil. Listen to what he has to say about this photo here.
