Latin American Photobooks: A Curator’s Perspective

Arturo Soto was born in 1981 in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. He has published the photobooks In the Heat (2018) and A Certain Logic of Expectations (2021). Soto holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Oxford, an MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and an MA in Art History from University College London. He curated the exhibition Foreign Correspondence at the Architectural Association and took part in the first edition of Forecast Platform at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. His writing has been published on Dispatches, VII Insiders’s blog on Substack. He also published in C4 Journal, Photo-Eye, Photomonitor, Elephant, Objektiv, and ASX.

Laura Carbonell is an independent curator born in Bogota, Colombia in 1986. In 2015, she founded Punto De Funga Bogota, an experimental photobook platform dedicated to the study, the exhibition and the conceptualization of photography books in Europe and Latin America. Later on she was a young curator to conceive the exhibition Worlds, People, Places for the Noorderlicht Photo Gallery in The Netherlands. In 2022 she presented Universo Fotolibro in Madrid, an exhibition with a selection of 56 Latin American photography books that showed different ways of reading books made in the region.
