Reestruturando os registros históricos do Brasil
Neste evento ao vivo – conduzido em português – o fotógrafo colaborador da VII, Leonardo Carrato, e o pesquisador visual Guilherme Cunha apresentarão “Retratistas do Morro”, um projeto fotográfico que reconfigura os registros históricos do Brasil.
Esse movimento artístico começou nas favelas brasileiras durante a década de 1960. Envolveu fotógrafos – incluindo as figuras-chave de João Mendes e Afonso Pimenta – que viveram e trabalharam nessas áreas, capturando o cotidiano de suas comunidades. Por 50 anos, esses fotógrafos documentaram as experiências dos moradores do Aglomerado da Serra, uma das maiores favelas do Brasil situada em Belo Horizonte.
João Mendes e Afonso Pimenta mostram as trajetórias de vida, desafios e conquistas das populações periféricas do país, narradas a partir da visão local, revelando uma versão alternativa da história recente do Brasil. Ao documentar eventos cotidianos, essas imagens oferecem insights sobre as mudanças sociais, políticas, econômicas e culturais nas favelas ao longo das últimas cinco décadas.
Guilherme Cunha apresentará sua extensa pesquisa para o projeto “Retratistas do Morro” durante este evento. Ele irá mostrar o livro recentemente publicado e nos falar sobre múltiplas exposições que acontecerão este ano.
Retratistas do Morro: Reshaping Brazil’s historical records
In this live event – conducted in Portuguese – VII contributing photographer Leonardo Carrato and visual researcher Guilherme Cunha will present “Retratistas do Morro,” a photography project that reshapes Brazil’s historical records.
This artistic movement started in the Brazilian favelas during the 1960s. It involved photographers – including the key figures of João Mendes and Afonso Pimenta – who lived and worked in these areas capturing the daily life of their communities. For 50 years, these photographers documented the experiences of the residents of Aglomerado da Serra, one of the largest favelas in Brazil situated in Belo Horizonte.
João Mendes and Afonso Pimenta show the life trajectories, challenges, and achievements of the country’s impoverished populations, narrated from the local worldview, revealing an alternative version of Brazil’s recent history. By documenting everyday events, these images give insight into the social, political, economic, and cultural shifts in the favelas over the past five decades.
Guilherme Cunha will present his extensive research for the “Retratistas do Morro” project during this event. He will showcase the recently published book and tell us about multiple upcoming exhibitions this year.
