This four-part workshop is for any photographer who wants to integrate aerial drone imagery into their practice.
In the first session, Tomas van Houtryve will focus on the creative possibilities of aerial imaging. He will explain his inspiration and give behind-the-scenes insights about his World Press Photo award winning drone series, “Blue Sky Days.” Tomas will share his practical tips about using drones for still photography and filmmaking.
The second session will cover the security, privacy, and ethical issues of putting a camera in the air. Participants will learn best practices that foster respect for all the stakeholders of a drone flight.
During the third class, participants will learn to create flight plans for specific locations. Using airspace maps and researching local regulations, participants will plan their own missions.
During the final class, students will present their flight plans to the group and get feedback from Tomas.

About Tomas van Houtryve
Tomas van Houtryve is a photographer, conceptual artist, and author whose major works interweave investigative journalism, philosophy, and metaphor. Van Houtryve makes images using a wide range of processes, ranging from 19th-century wet plate collodion to Augmented Reality.
He has been creating imagery using aerial drones since 2013, and the resulting work has been displayed at the British Museum in London, the Kennedy Center in Washington, Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, the MoCP in Chicago and has been published by TIME, Le Monde Magazine, GEO, The Guardian Weekend Magazine and others.
A selection of Tomas’ awards include the Roger Pic Prize (2019), CENTER Producer’s Choice Award (2018), CatchLight / Pulitzer Fellowship (2017), Hasselblad Foundation Research and Development Award (2017), ICP Infinity Award (2015), World Press Photo, Second Prize (2015), Aaron Siskind Fellowship (2014), POY World Understanding Award (2012), POY Photographer of the Year (2010), Bayeux Prize for War Correspondents (2006), Visa pour l’Image Young Photographer Award (2006) and numerous others.
