Shirin Abedi

Shirin Abedi is a documentary photographer interested in topics such as emancipation, shame, and love. Shirin was born in 1996 in Tehran, Iran, and grew up in Hanover, Germany, where she still lives today.  Her greatest fascination is life itself, subtlety, and everyday heroes and their battles.

Shirin Abedi received the Inge Morath Award from the Magnum Foundation in 2023. She is also a grantee of Journalism Fund, Stiftung Kunstfonds and VG Bild Kunst, and her work has been exhibited internationally in Germany, France, Finland, Estonia and Bangladesh. Since 2022, Shirin is a jury member of the German Youth Photo Prize.

Her personal long-term project “May I Have This Dance?” documents the social change in Iran in collaboration with young female dancers since 2019. “Invisible Students” investigates the long-term effects of school bullying in Germany. Her latest research examines the effects of the displacement of cultural and historical artefacts from West Asian countries to European museums. In doing so, she deals with museums, memories and hypocrisy.
