The Invention of Hiking

Humans have been walking since the dawn of time, but when did we start hiking in nature for pleasure? Using a wet-plate camera, Tomas van Houtryve explored the original hiking trails in the forest of Fontainebleau, created during the 19th century by Claude-Fran├žois Denecourt. These photos are featured in the May 2020 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine.
